Changing places, changing lives – one green step at a time
Big global issues – the economy, the environment – have a big local impact. We work across the UK helping communities find practical solutions to the challenges they face.
We provide training and create jobs, reduce energy and waste, re-connect people with nature and transform whole neighbourhoods. Step by step we’ll go on changing places and changing lives until everywhere is vibrant and green, every community is strong enough to shape its own destiny and everyone can reach their potential.
We’ve been working for more than 30 years where we’re needed most – on the ground in communities across the South of England, delivering hundreds of projects every year.
1. Do you need volunteers? What for?
Groundwork South actively encourages volunteering and we currently have over 200 volunteers who regularly give their time across many of our projects. Several of our volunteers have moved into employment with us. In Hillingdon we have been successfully running the Com Café for 15 years on the Glebe Estate helping to engage with many vulnerable families and we are always needing general volunteers to help out with our many and varied activities. We are also in the process of setting up our very first Groundwork Charity Shop only 5 minutes’ drive away from the Com Café on Violet Avenue near Hillingdon Hospital and we will need to recruit a 24 strong band of willing volunteers to help us run front of house and sort donations.
2. Are you fundraising for anything specific that you would like to highlight?
Yes, our Healing Gardens service is available to lone, vulnerable, elderly and/or disabled residents in Hillingdon. Our band of garden volunteers , often themselves with mild disabilities, help people keep on top of their gardens and make simple adaptations (for example raised beds, handrails, ramps etc) to allow people to access their gardens with all the physical and mental wellbeing benefits this brings. Due to increasing demand we have over 25 people on our waiting list as current funding only allows us to deliver our service one day per week. It costs around £100 per garden makeover so any funding secured to widen this scheme would be gratefully received. For more information please contact Matthew Hartgrove on 07906 229257.
3. Do you need any donations apart from money? E.G. Computers, other equipment
Yes please any good quality second hand goods for sale at our new charity shop gratefully received so please contact Laura Muir at the Com Café on 01895 430751 for more information.
