HS2
13th January 2012
Nick Hurd’s statment on HS2.
As you know, the Secretary of State for Transport has given a green light to HS2 on the proposed route. This will have disappointed many constituents who are very concerned about the impact on Hillingdon and the Chilterns. The impact on Ruislip will be mitigated by more tunnelling, which is a good result. However, this does not help Ickenham and Harefield, which are the other two wards in my constituency that are most affected. I have already made this clear to the Secretary of State.
This process is going to take a long time and there is still plenty to play for. I expect a judicial review and a continued campaign against the Government's decision. Whatever the outcome of that campaign, the Government has signalled that there is still a great deal to negotiate on in terms of mitigation and compensation.
My job is to represent the interests of my constituents and I will continue to work closely with John Randall MP and Hillingdon Council in that task. Many of you were kind enough to say that my response to the consultation was a good reflection of the local view and I have followed that up with representations at the highest level.
Immediately after the statement I had a meeting with HS2 to discuss local concerns and I attach a summary of the responses I got. Please feel free to come back to me with any comment or supplementary questions.
I know the strength of feeling on this issue and will continue to keep you posted on developments.
